Royal York hotel is one of the oldest hotels in Toronto. Royal York Hotel was built in 1929 by George Allen Ross and Robert Henry Macdonald right across
Union station. In 19th century William Cornelius Van Horne wanted to build hotels at every key stop along the Canadian Pacific Railway and Royal York Hotel was one of them. It is a majestic 28 storey building and has ten elevators, which was quite a luxury at the time, as well as radios in each guest room. It has 1600 rooms with private baths, which was unheard of. The concert hall has a pipe organ and adds even more glitter to the luxury of Royal York Hotel.
In 1999 Canadian Pacific Hotels & Resorts acquired Fairmont Hotels and now their headquarters are in
Toronto and the hotel name changed to Fairmont Royal York Hotel.
Canadian Pacific Hotels company also built Mount Stephen House in the Canadian Rocky Mountains, Banff Springs Hotel in 1888; in 1890 - Chateau Lake Louise; in 1893 -
Le Chateau Frontenac in
Quebec City was built and in 1912
Château Laurier in
Ottawa opened its doors.
